Excellence Institutions in Freiburg
Here you can order the Institutional Strategy "Windows for Research"
The Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments fosters outstanding research at German universities. The University of Freiburg is one of just nine universities to be distinguished in all three lines of funding of the competition (Graduate School, Cluster of Excellence, Institutional Strategy) and thus enjoys the highest level of funding. The university has demonstrated its excellent research profile in a wide variety of disciplines.
- At the Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM) doctoral researchers find excellent conditions for completing their dissertation projects.
- With the excellence cluster BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies the university has ventured into a highly innovative transdisciplinary research area and set the stage for future achievements with numerous newly appointed professors and a stimulating research programme.
Three institutions give concrete form to the objectives of the Institutional Strategy:
- the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), a research institute which strengthens top-level research at the university,
- the International Graduate Academy (IGA), which supports early career researchers in the doctoral research phase,
- and the Junior Research Group Programme, which promotes promising early career researchers in the postdoctoral phase.
The Excellence Initiative has enabled the university to establish research-friendly structures and foster intensive transdisciplinary collaboration both at and outside of the university. The University of Freiburg is thus in an excellent position to sustain and enhance its status as one of the most distinguished higher education institutions in the world.
