Competing for Excellence – What does it really mean?
Competing for Excellence – What does it really mean?
An evening of critical discussion à la carte
April 28, 2017, 6pm – 9:30pm, Haus zur Lieben Hand, Large meeting room
The evening discussion will address the pros and cons of the Excellence Competition. After an informational section on the idea and history of the Excellence Initiative, external and internal speakers took a stand on various aspects of the competition in three rounds of statements. Between the rounds there was time for discussion in the plenum and – during regular breaks – in smaller groups. The aim was to create the opportunity for all interested parties to openly and critically discuss the topic of the Excellence Initiative/ Strategy.
Together with the Rector of the University of Freiburg, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, the following participated in the discussion:
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bröckling, Sociology (University of Freiburg); Dr. Hans-Gerhard Husung, former Secretary General of the Joint Science Conference (GWK); Dr. Beate Konze-Thomas, former Department Head of the Coordinated Programmes and Infrastructure at the German Research Foundation (DFG); Prof. Dr. Elke Lütjen-Drecoll, Vice-Chairwoman of the Imboden Commission; Prof. Dr. Tilmann Reitz, Sociology (University Jena); Mandy Gratz, Member of the board of the free association of student bodies (fzs) e.V.
Moderator: Oliver Schroeder (MAZ – Die Schweizer Journalistenschule/The Swiss School of Journalism)
