“Pro and Contra cience – Career Prospects for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Students? Testimonials. Assessments. Recommendations.”

Date: Monday, January 22, 2018, 7pm – 9pm

Place: Haus “Zur Lieben Hand,” Large meeting room

Careers in science are a dream come true: one’s own interest in scientific knowledge is the focus of well-paid professional work, one’s contribution to social, cultural and economic progress, exchange with like-minded people all over the world, teaching and research, lectures and publications promise prestige and – perhaps even – fame. In addition, university policy support programs and professional development in the academic field make the path to the ultimate goal plannable and transparent.

But is that true? Aren't risks and burdens also associated with a decision in favor of science? How can children and family tasks be reconciled with a scientific career? Isn't a non-university career perhaps much more attractive?

Visitors were warmly welcome to discuss these questions and more with the panel members after the keynote from Prof. Dr. Jule Specht, Institute of Psychology at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and spokesperson for the Young Academy, brief statements from various perspectives from Dr. Sabine Behrenbeck, Department head for higher Education in the Wissenschaftsrat (scientific council), Dr. Andreas Keller, deputy representative and head of the organizational area for higher education and research for the union for education and science and Dr. Jennifer Eßer, deputy group leader “Vascular Remodelling” at the University Heart Center – Bad Krozingen and member of – Junior Scientists and Academics Network Freiburg. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Arndt Michael (Program Coordinator for Colloquium politicum).

Following the event, visitors were invited to attend a small reception in Haus “Zur Lieben Hand.”
